Greta's blog (Day 2, February 17th 2017):

Dive Day #1! We got up at 6 am to get ready for our first of two days of open-water-dive certification. Breakfast was made in the room in the kitchen and we ate our eggs out on the balcony in warm, sunny weather. We packed everything we thought we‘d need and then headed down to the resort main entrance for a 7:55 am pick-up. Dive Saint Lucia was there to pick us up on time and it was a about a 15-20 minute drive to the dive shop.

We met our instructor Julia, who was from France. In our class was Paul & Be-a, who were also from France and had just completed their pool & classroom work with Julia earlier that week. We’d done our work in Osseo MN Aquaventures just a couple of weeks earlier.

We headed out on the boat, along with some experienced scuba divers who were there to make their own dives and some snorkelers. Julia then took the four of us into the water, and our first dive consisted of a few exercises and plus swimming underwater, enjoying the sights and getting comfortable with our gear. We went down about 12 meters for the first dive. We saw various things, including a lion fish, moray eels, and lots of other aquatic life. Back on to the boat after a few surface exercises, and it was time for lunch. And OH MY did it taste good after that time in the salt water. Lunch was a home-cooked Caribbean meal – chicken legs cooked in some sort of wonderful sauce, cooked red-fruit, lentils, plus an assortment of veggies. Lots of water was on hand, and a local banana for dessert tasted great.

The 2nd dive was then started. We had more exercises underwater (clearing a full mask, buddy-breathing, etc.) and then more scuba-diving underwater – learning how to hover, how to swim with your buddy, how to watch for things, and always keeping an eye on your remaining oxygen. After that, we were back on the boat & headed back to the marina.

The marina was about an hour-ride (with a stop to pick up/drop off people at Marigod Bay) from where we dove. In the Marina was docked sailboat called Raven from Oriental, NC – where Mike’s parents live! What an odd coincidence. We got back to the dive shop, filled out our dive logs for the day, discussed what we’d done/seen/had problems with, and then a taxi-bus took us all back to our resorts. We were the last ones off, with two other guys who also were staying at Windjammer.

After a little relaxing and cleaning up, we headed down to our car to exchange it for the right car. This also is a Toyota, with Japanese stickers on the outside... we’ll find out later whether it speaks English. Then off to Jammers again for supper. Greta had the Jerk King Fish with rice & veggies and Mike had the special of the day... a Penne Pasta dish with Mushroom cream sauce & chicken. Everything was wonderful, but we were tired so we headed back up to the room to crash for the night. The 2nd day of certification will come soon enough!
