Day 1: Feb 10, 2024

We got up early this morning (4:40 AM) to head to the airport for an 8 AM flight. Remi had been dropped off at "camp" at Back Forty Kennels the night before, so it was definitely a quiet morning. We got to the airport and through security with no issues and were at the gate by 6:45. Breakfast was at Lolo's - Mike got the bacon/eggs/hashbrowns and Greta got the breakfast chorizo tostadas. Everything was great.

Our flight left a BIT late due to "debris" on the runway - that was a new one. Apparently some garbage had blown on to the runway right before we took off so we were redirected to the other runway. Overall, the flight had some turbulence due to storms but we got to Houston only a few minutes late. We had a 10 minute walk to our next gate, and after bathroom stops for both of us, they were already boarding our next flight to Bonaire. We got on with little issue and were seated in the middle of the plane. By the time they shut the door, we noticed the entire middle of the plane had very few filled seats, so we each sat in our own row! Window seat! Aisle Seat! All the armrests! It was quite a nice way to fly for 4+ hours. We saw the Bahamas from the air and it was beautiful. Neither plane had charging jacks for phones/iPads, so that wasn't ideal but plenty of time for reading.

We landed in Bonaire a bit early and easily were through customs & got our bags in under an hour. Overall, this may have least stressful travel day ever. The guy who met us at the airport (along with 3 other people) gave us our room key right then, so no need to go to the Front Desk. It was dark by the time we left, and the driver said it took about an hour to get to Buddy's Dive Resort. That seemed strange for a small island but we were all too tired to question it much. Fortunately, he was joking and it was maybe a 20 minute ride.

After unloading our bags in the room and a quick change to shorts, we went to Blennie's Restaurant for supper. All we'd had to eat all day was a chocolate quinoa crunch cookie on the first flight and then another cookie, plus a pretzel mix on the 2nd flight. The cookies, by the way, were AMAZINGLY GOOD. It was taco bar night, so we bought some tickets, and shared a serving of ceviche. Mike had both a shrimp taco and a pulled pork taco. Greta had a shrimp taco and a duck taco. Not a lot of food but it fit the bill. We had a couple drinks as well, and had a quick walk around the resort before heading back to our room for the night.

Bonaire is 2 hours ahead of Minnesota, but after a long day of travel, the 10 PM mark didn't feel early to us at all.
