Finally a bit of relaxation for the first time on our vacation! No alarms to wake up to, no
scheduled ANYTHING for the day. Unfortunately, Mike has come down with either a nasty cold or a
mild version of the flu. Not fun for him. Lots of coughing, runny nose, fever, chills & aches.
He found some cough medication in the minimart made here in the Caribbean Islands that is comparable
to the Robitussin he often uses, so that’s a plus.
We had breakfast in the room again with staples we bought at the store yesterday (eggs, bacon,
bread, peanut butter, OJ). We relaxed out on the balcony for the rest of the morning and then
headed down to the resort reception area for lunch. Before eating, we wandered the grounds a
bit – found the restaurants, found the watersports shop & checked out the beach. Beautiful!
Then lunch. Embers was offering a Sunday brunch (that didn’t start until noon) that was
pretty impressive but since Mike wasn’t feeling good, we just opted for Jammers again (the only
other option was the on-site steakhouse). Greta had chicken roti (chicken curry w/potatoes wrapped
in a Caribbean flatbread) with a side salad. Mike just had Caesar salad – which was very tiny
(about the same size as Greta’s side salad but promoted as if it was an entrée). Greta had a few
fancy fruity drinks but Mike stuck with water. Then off to the beach!
We found some open chairs on the far north end of the beach with a bit of shade as well. Mike hopped
in the water for a bit to cool off but Greta just relaxed. We both read for a few hours and enjoyed
some fancy crystal light stored in a water bottle, kept in a collapsible cooler we’d gotten on our
trip to Aruba in 2012. It’s a good little beach caddy.
Afterwards, we headed a back to the room for a bit and researched where we’d go for supper. We
also tried to make reservations for the next night at Papa Don’s – the Italian restaurant that’s up
in the villas close to us but they were already booked until 8:30 so we opted to make a reservation
for Tuesday instead. After looking around on Google, we decided on Matthew’s, which got good
reviews on Trip Advisor, but no real website (like the Laurel’s debacle the night before). So off
we went, and found out like the grocery store, that the wrong hours were listed on Google… it was
closed on Sundays, as were a lot of places here. So we popped up Google again to find other places
and found that Delirius BBQ was close by; Greta had found it earlier and since it had a real website,
we thought it should be open. It was, although we passed a number of other places on our short
walk there that were also closed. Fortunately, it was not busy and we sat down immediately. After
a couple attempts to order drinks on the menu that weren’t available due to availability of fruit,
Greta got a mint-ginger drink and Mike got papaya punch. Both were pretty good. The food was
great. Mike got 8 oz. of beef brisket on a bun with a side of mac & cheese. Greta got the Jerk
Tuna with a side of grilled veg. OUTSTANDING on both counts. It was all outdoors seating and by the
end of the night, there were FOUR cats wandering about the grounds. People would feed them bits
of food, so they seemed to be doing OK. Greta tried to give them some bread but there were
not impressed… as much as she likes cats, she wasn’t sharing her tuna though.
Then, back to the resort for an early night in. Hopefully Mike is feeling better soon. He
did calculate our walk up (it’s VERY steep as mentioned earlier) and while the resort lobby is a
few feet above sea level, our villa is 196 feet above sea level. And it’s a STEEP, STEEP walk –
nothing gradual about it. So while we’re eating differently than normal, by the end of the trip,
we should have well-defined calf muscles … at least if our knees don’t give out first!
