It's the first full day of vacation & we had scuba diving planned in the afternoon. We made some bacon & eggs for
breakfast and then Mike called the diving company to clarify when to show up & where. Then we found out that they'd
cancelled the day's dive (Mike's phone isn't working great down here & we didn't get the voice mail until an hour
later) due to high winds. They already had cancelled Monday's dives and were not very hopeful about the rest of the week. We
even tried called up to Key Looe and all the way to Key Largo - same story - high winds. We are hoping that we'll get
some diving in this week but it's not looking too promising. We instead booked a sunset cruise for the evening.
There's a vehicle parked directly outside of our condo with an "Adams Motors" sticker on it (dealership in Montevideo that
used to be owned by Greta's cousin) with Minnesota plates. The people were just getting out of it, so we said hello. They
are actually from Dawson and are named Jeff & Gretchen Loose. There are at least 3 other Minnesota cars in the c
omplex, as well as other Midwestern states.
We drove down to Higgs Beach for a bit, where there amazingly was free parking. We walked around on a few piers (it was
windy and almost chilly in the wind) and through an Artisan market. At the pier, there was a very brave egret watching
some people fish (or more importantly, watching their bait). He got very close a few times. A dog chased him off
once (he screeched at the dog and startled the fishermen) but then returned again for another try. At the market, here
was some good looking food at some of the stands but we were full from breakfast. We headed back to the condo for a bit,
and then walked into "Old Town". At one point on the main street, we saw a police officer requesting people to put their
masks on - while the shops all have signs outside requiring masks , we didn't realize that it actually was enforced outside
as well. Eventually we made our way over to "First Flight" Restaurant/Bar which is in the building that originally
housed PanAm. The last time we were here it was Kelly's but ownership changed a few years back. We shared some smoked
brisket mac-n-cheese and had a couple drinks, and then headed to the harbor. We checked in for our cruise, and then had
30 minutes to wander around the harbor.
The cruise was through Fury and they had two big catamarans to take everyone out. Appetizers & drinks were included in
the price. It was breezy, but a beautiful night with a band playing live music. The sunset was great too - no green flash,
but the conditions were almost right for it. After we got off the boat, we stopped by the Conch Republic Restaurant for
supper, and then walked back to the condo. It's nice to be able to walk there and back, although after a long day, it felt
like a long walk (but was approximately 3/4 of a mile).
