We headed downstairs for breakfast (included in the hotel stay every day!) at 7 am. We both had the Honduran breakfast. That included eggs
over easy, fried plantains, chorizo sausage, sliced avocado, refried beans, and sour cream. The food was wonderful and not too much - the
perfect amount before going diving.
We met at the dive center at 8am. Due to storms in the area the last few days (northern) the dive center had moved their boats to the south
side of the island , as the normal dive sites would be difficult to use due to wind, waves and rain. We rode in a truck over to the south
side. Will was the driver/boat captain, Mike and Greta rode in the truck with him and Elise had to ride on the flatbed in back (through the
rain!) as there wasn't room for all of us. By the time we got to the boat, which was moored at Marco's, the rain had stopped and we the
loaded the boat with the equipment. There was a slight delay as the locks on both boats were corroded and they couldn't get the soap out
for defogging masks, but eventually Elise got one of the locks open (after the key broke off in the lock).
Our first stop was at Lita's Hole. It was a great mix of a wall, shallow diving, and swimming through some rock formations, including the
hole. It was a bit cloudy, which makes sense due to the rain they've been having but the sun was out at the end of the dive. We saw various
fish including a number of lion fish, lobster, a spotted grouper, and various other Carribbean reef fish. The boat captain saw a turtle swim
under the boat but we didn't see it. Then we went up for our surface interval, and moved over to Shark Bait Shallow. It rained on and off
during the surface interval, so it was nice to keep our wetsuits on.
The water was clearer here, even though it was close by. We dropped back in the water (water temp was 81, air temp was simliar). As soon as
we got to the bottom, Greta was looking for the GoPro, looked down and saw a nurse shark hanging out under a outcropping of coral! She
signaled to Mike and Elise; Mike couldn't even see it at first because he was directly above the coral shelf which the shark was under. But
it was not impressed with us seeing it, so it swam off and we all got to see it. We then wandered around on the bottom and along a wall. We
got to see a number of fish again, and right when it was time to go up, we saw another (yes, deciding it's a different one) nurse shark. What
a way to end a dive!
We headed back to where the boat was moored - it's near the airport so the entire time we were out, we did see a few planes land or take
off. On the drive back to the resort, it rained even more. We'd seen what looked like a water spout before we got to the boat mooring, and
later on, we drove in the the thick of it. Poor Elise was once again in the back and it was still pouring when we arrived at Naboo. The
alleyway in front of the resort was running water, like a river. We unloaded, and Sabrina let Elise run home and shower/change (she literally
lives around the corner) before finishing work there that day.
We headed back, showered to warm up, and then downloaded the pictures from the day. After a couple more hours, and various rain showers, we
swung by a local mart and picked up some beer to have on the balcony in the future. Then we walked out to the beach, which is a few minutes
away. We had to wade through the water in the alleyway at times and through a little shopping/restaurant area, and walked along the famed
West Beach. We were trying to find Hacienda Caribe Tesoro, which Elise had recommended. We walked past a sign advertising it, and all the
way to the end of where it possibly could be and still couldn't find it. We asked at a nearby restaurant (who shared a sign with it) and they
said to go back and we'd find it along the walkway. We still couldn't find it and asked some poeple who were walking past. They didn't know
either and then one noticed a little restaurant area going out into the water (built on a dock) that was the place!. They'd been there the day
before but didn't realize the name. And we all had missed it at first because it wsan't open and the "welcome" sign was rather
small. So... maybe another time.
We then stopped at Llama Mama II along the beach after seeing it on Trip Advisor and being hailed in by the host of the day. Mike stuck with
local beers and Greta got a Pineapple Coconut Vanilla Margarita and later a rum & coke. We then shared an order of ceviche with tortilla
chips, which was AMAZING.
We headed back to the hotel for a bit. We tried watching the Super Bowl on ESPN3 but it didn't have the American commercials, so eventually
muted it while Mike watched YouTube and Greta read. We watched the Half Time show, which was boring, and then headed downstairs to
dinner. This time, we both had margaritas, which were great, and Greta had a mohito - which was excellent! For dinner, they served us a
starter plate of chips with salsa & refried beans, which was on the house. Then, Mike ordered coconut shirmp with a salad and rice. Greta
got the friend whole snapper, with fries and vegetables. Everything was excellent. We then headed back to the room and as we were tired, and
went to bed soon afterwards.
