Day 3

Since we were spending the day on Kekekabic and noone was in a hurry to go anywhere, we made some pancakes for breakfast. Due to the fire restriction we couldn't use a campfire to cook breakfast, so we had to use Loren's camp stove. This thing is amazing, it folds down to the size of a pop can, and can boil enough water for 4 cups of coffee in a matter of minutes.

Jake and Mike discuss what the plans are for the day. Loren and Mike are going to go out paddling and hiking on a little day trip while I've already decided what I'm going to do for the day.

No timetable today. This guy was our alarm clock.

Loren and Mike paddle to the east side of Kekekabic Lake and hike up the mountain to the place where the old fire tower used to be.

These two pictures really give you a good idea of the scale of the blowdown in the BWCA. Mike is about 5'10", and these trees are snapped off at least 6 feet over his head. Looking down from an elevated position as in the second picture really gives you an idea of the destruction in the blowdown area. I guess sometimes mother nature needs to flex her muscles to show us how strong she really is.

Here are some more pictures from on top of the mountain looking down at Kekekabic Lake. The last picture shows our fearless climbers in a picturesque background.

While Mike and Jake relax in the hammocks, I show off the handiwork Jake and I accomplished while Loren and Mike were gone on their daytrip. Notice the pile of firewood and the tarp (complete with center pole) for the rain that never came.

Loren wanted to do some more hiking and decided to go to the north side of the island to snap some more pictures. Here are the results... |

Another dinner, another tasty meal. Mike's turn to cook, and he made pizza. Here is Jake helping with the prep work for the meal. |
