Day 5

Jake Portaging

Our last day in the BWCA. We saved the best for last (or actually the worst). After folding up camp and paddling across Ensign, we hit the longest portage of the trip, 220 rods, almost 3/4 of a mile. Here is Jake making the trip across.

After paddling across Boot Lake, we had two short portages left (a 30 rod and a 50 rod portage) before hitting Snowbank on the way out. At the end of Boot Lake we noticed the Wenonah canoe was taking water in the front flotation compartment. We couldn't find the duct tape we were almost sure we packed, so we ended up having to fix the canoe with bandaids from the first aid kit. The medical tape in there only stuck to itself, so it was worthless.

While we were patching the canoe, Loren took a couple more scenic shots right at the landing of the portage. Here is a little stream that runs from Boot Lake into the tiny lake that links us to Snowbank.

Here we are back at the entry point. Absent are pictures of the two miles of some seriously wavy water due to the high winds barreling down Snowbank. We had waves rolling right over the front of the canoe, one guy paddled, one guy bailed water. Anyway, we're finally in, and loaded up for our drive back home.

Jake is taking the pictures here, otherwise he'd be in one of the shots too. From left to right it's Loren, myself, and Mike. All of us had only one thing on our minds at this point, "give me a large coke with lots of ice". We stopped at the Hardees in Ely.
Unpacking

Back at the McDonald residence. It was time to unpack all the gear. We did find the duct tape, by the way, tucked under the first aid bag in the same zip lock bag as the ice packs. We could have found it if we really needed it.
What a great way to spend a week! Can't wait to do it again.
