We all slept in a bit and Mike got another run in. We met up for breakfast and this time discovered
that there were two omelet lines on the Lido Deck by the pool, a small buffet, and the Blue Iguana
had both breakfast burritos and Huevos Rancheros. We all got what we'd needed to eat in short
time. Then we got set for our swim & snorkel boat cruise. We thought we'd walk to the Cruise
Port terminal from the boat - it seemed silly to take a bus that they were offering. Then we
discovered that it was LONG LONG LONG walk to the terminal - it was at least half a mile. Oh
well - we were not in a hurry and it was a nice day.
We found where we were to meet our Black Pearl tour and then wandered the shopping areas. The little
bus took us to a harbor, where we signed in and then got on the Jolly Roger (a pirate ship replica!)
for our tour. We were given a welcome Rum Punch which was a little odd tasting but it's all part of
the fun. We were boated just a little ways away, and they brought over a smaller boat - basically,
a pontoon. That could get us in closer for our snorkeling. We were brought a short ways and hopped
in. First there was a sea turtle, then a sting ray. The next thing you know, there were at least
6 sting rays swimming below us. We were called back to our pontoon, and saw a couple more
turtles. Then they took us towards the boat again, and we could snorkel above two wrecks. The
first one was deeper and we couldn't see a lot. The next one was shallower and teeming with fish,
including a school near the surface of sparkly needle-nosed fish none of us had seen before. Then
they called us back and we swam to the Jolly Roger. We really could have used a little more time
on the snorkeling but it was time for lunch. While we motored up-island, lunch was served buffet
style. We'd had the choice of fish , chicken or beef before boarding. Mike and Greta both had
the fish, which was yellow-fin tuna, and it was very good. They were grilling off the back of
the boat. The buffet had various items including a macaroni pie, potato salad, and Caribbean
vegetables. The food was EXCELLENT. They had advertised "Bahamian Style BBQ" and they did
not disappoint.
Once we were done eating, and the boat anchored out, it was swimming time. We were further up shore
from the cruise ship and could no longer see it but were along a beautiful stretch of beach, with
some very fancy looking homes or resorts. First you had the opportunity to "walk the plank" and
jump into the green-blue water. It was very warm and salty enough that you barely had to kick to
stay bobbing in the water. Later, they got out the rope swing as well, and you could swing out
over the water and drop down with a splash. It all was a lot of fun and we were there for 45
minutes. Then we headed back to their harbor and hopped a little bus back to the boat.
Mike and Greta split off and picked up a couple little figurines (a bird and a turtle) from a
local man selling things carved from mahogany root. He gave us a lot of background on what he
had done, and how the mahogany got there, as it was not native to Barbados but now grew there. They
got back to the ship just to drop off their wet stuff and the carved items, then headed back to
town to find a shark. Not a lot of the shops were open, but we walked in close to where the
Jolly Roger was moored, and then turned back. We never did find a shark souvenir, so opted to
get a carved wall hanging of a flying fish. We'd seen some off the boat wake the day before,
and the flying fish is the fish of Barbados.
We then got back on the little bus back to the ship, where we could shower and relax before
dinner. Greta had THREE appetizers (a salad, escambeche shrimp, and pumpkin soup) and they
were all good. Her seafood pasta was OK, and dessert was a salted-caramel custard topped
with a few pieces of caramel popcorn. Mike's dinner was also good but as of the Sunday morning
typing, we can't remember what it was any more.
After that, we attended two comedy shows - first Spike Jones and then Scotty K. Both were 30
minutes shows and entertaining. Then it was time for bed as it was nearing midnight.
