Off to the airport we were at 5 am. Security was a breeze and very quick. Once inside security,
we stopped at Barrio for some breakfast as we had over an hour before we needed to be by the gate.
Breakfast was great, and recommended if you are ever in the Humphrey Terminal at breakfast time.
We all sat on the aisle row at the front of the plane and that worked out well. Almost the first on,
almost the first off. Ahhh, beautiful Miami!
Picking up the rental car was interesting. You ride a tram from the main airport to where all the
rental car desks are. Then once you get your paperwork, you ride down to the ground level of a
parking ramp & pick up your car. We got a little lost trying to get out of the ramp & had to go
through the security-exit gate a 2nd time but eventually found our way out of the ramp.
And south we went. There is a LOT of traffic going towards the Keys on a Sunday afternoon. It’s
a lot of stop & go for the first leg. At one point, Greta is sure that she saw an alligator alongside
of the bike trail. And we all definitely saw a lizard further down the road, on the bike trail, that
was at least 4 feet long from head to toe. Apparently biking along Hwy 1 is an adventure in itself
in southern Florida.
Once we got to the Keys, we stopped at Snapper’s. We had a few fruity cocktails, plus 3 kinds of
ceviche (shrimp, conch & wahoo), blackened mahi, bruschetta, and shrimp/jalapeño torpedoes. It was
all perfect.
We got back on the road and drove for another hour or two, stopping at Big Pine Key. Both our
waitress and a friend from Michigan (Kevin) recommended “No Name Bar” so we searched it out. It’s
stuck way back beyond the Key Deer Sanctuary. There’s a miniature breed of deer in the Keys that is
endangered. We saw a few (they’re a little bigger than a dog) and while a lot of tourists are very
excited to see them, we, being from MN & IA, thought they just looked like small deer, but still
fun to spot one.
We found “No Name Bar” and were seated out back, in the back yard, which was perfect. We had a
pizza & some Caribbean wings, as well as some Key Lime pie. It won’t be the last time we have the
local specialty, that’s for sure! Mike and Jim got some good lizard pictures as well.
Then it was on to Key West. We got there right after sunset and checked in. A quick run to the
grocery store for a few provisions, and then we hit the pool and hot tub. That was a great way to
end our first day of vacation.
