Last full day in paradise today so we opted for relaxing all day. We drove down to the supposed
southernmost point of the continental US and took the obligatory picture next to the marker. Then
we headed over a couple blocks to Southernmost Café, which was recommended by Kevin as a great breakfast spot.
We had a bit of a wait but then were seated. Mike and Greta both had shrimp benedict with cilantro
Hollandaise, Jim had a shortrib & tomato quiche, and Trina had an omelet (I think). All the food
was outstanding!
Then back to the Hyatt Beach Resort for a day in the sun. We hung out between the pool and the channel
to the Gulf of Mexico for the afternoon. Whether under the cabanas, reading in the pool, in a hammock
or sitting in chairs under the mangrove trees, it was an excellent way to relax. Jim & Trina saw a
big iguana in the trees at one point – it’s such an odd thought to have them just APPEAR out
of no where! We went over to the Tiki Hut for late light lunch. Shrimp was the catch of the day so
Jim had them prepared in tacos and Mike & Greta both had sandwiches. Trina wanted a chicken
wrap but they were sold out so she had to opt for a different item. The food was prepared in a little
truck next to the tiki hut in the parking lot. The food was excellent and it’s a shame that it wasn’t
open past 6 pm at night.
Then off to our sunset cruise. We’d wanted to go with Danger Charters, as they did such an excellent
job with our snorkel & kayak cruise, but that was already booked up so we went with Fury instead. We
headed back to Old Town & the Harbor, got in an hour of wandering/shopping, and then back to the
boats. It was a huge three-level catamaran that took us out. We actually ran into a few people from our
snorkel cruise; they, like us, wanted to go with Danger but it was booked. This was nice too. The
sunset was spectacular, and drinks were offered the entire time.
That night, we made a quick drive over to El Siboney, a Cuban restaurant that had been recommended to
us by a few people PLUS was listed on nearly every “best restaurants on Key West” list on-line. And no
one was wrong. We all got different versions of meat or fish prepared with Cuban flavors, and served
with yellow rice and beans. As in Aruba, the Cuban food was the best meal of the trip.
