After sleeping in a bit, and then hanging out on the balcony, we headed down to the Orientation
meeting and continental breakfast. We got there 5 minutes early, but they’d already started
the different presentations about things to do in Key West. No worries – at the end they had
drawings where everyone had one chance to win something. Mike won a t-shirt, Trina won a 2 for 1
jet ski package and Jim won a 2-for-1 package for a snorkel cruise. So it worked out just fine.
We then headed to Duval street to walk around. We walked the harbor walk first and then headed into
town a bit. We stopped at Hog’s Breath for lunch (hog’s breath is better than no breath). Greta had
the shrimp po’boy sandwich, Jim & Trina both had fish tacos and Mike had some boom-boom shrimp. We
walked around some more and checked out shops & generally people-watched. Per our friend Kevin,
we walked a couple blocks off Duval to Kelly’s; it’s the old Pan Am terminal that’s been converted
to a restaurant/bar. It’s owned by Kelly McGillis. We had a couple margaritas (very good) and
enjoyed the fact we had no agenda and nothing to do.
Next we walked down to Mallory square, where we’ve been told that’s the place to see the sunset.
We watched some street performers “The Red Trousers” who combined juggling and some acrobatics.
They were a lot of fun to watch, and included audience participation. Then we wandered down a bit to
see the crazy French guy with the cats who jump through rings of fire. That is the BEST way to describe
it – he had cats walk on a cable & they more/less actually LISTENED to him (although no one knew what
he was saying even though he’s apparently lived here for 30 years). The sunset was beautiful and the
crowd applauded at the end.
We then headed to Conch Republic for supper. Mike & Jim both had the Snapper Wellington stuffed with
crab meat plus veggies and sweet potatoes. Greta & Trina both had the catch-of-the-day which was
blackened sword fish, with rice & veggies. The food was great & you got a lot of it as well.
Then back to our hotel, where we were tired out from a long day.
