Valentine’s Day. Breakfast tacos in the condo started out the day. We relaxed at the condo for a
bit then headed to the Public Dock for the Kittiwake Dive. We went out with Dom & Pierre again.
Dom explained to us the basic history and where we’d be going. After tipping in (backward roll into the
water), we went to the bottom, where the Ex-USS Kittiwake was sitting. Due to a hurricane back in October,
it was now tipped on its side. It had been sunk there earlier to make an artificial reef and dive area.
Large holes were cut in the sides to allow easy passage in/out of areas of the boat. And we went all
around it multiple times (Jim/Mike/Greta – Trina stayed above and snorkeled). It was simply amazing going
through it all. To save on oxygen, we were told inside to pull ourselves along the sides if we could.
Because it’s a steel ship, there was plenty of rust, so it was quite prickly to touch. Often we’d bang a
tank/head/arm/leg/foot and one in a while, caught a hose on something. But nothing that couldn’t easily be
gotten out of. It was so interesting going through the ship – seeing the old mess hall, seeing the cannon
area, seeing everything and imagining walking through it in a dry situation. Seeing it all at a 45 degree
(approx.) tilt made it a bit surreal, and I don’t think that someone who is claustrophobic would enjoy that
too much. It was an amazing dive and something I’ll always remember.
After the dive, we headed back to the condo to clean up for Valentine’s afternoon & dinner. We got to
Caymana Bay shopping center. Every Wednesday there’s a farmer’s market there with a lot of craftsmen.
Unfortunately, this was also the day of a large Agricultural Fair on a different part of the island; while
we were aware of this, we did not realize that this mean the Farmer’s Market didn’t take place at Caymana
Bay. So that was a bit of a disappointment as we’d wanted to do some souvenir shopping and really all
that was left were regular shops, some of which were closed that day . Since we’d skipped lunch, we DID
find a gelato shop and that was a fun treat.
We met the water taxi at 4:20 (that took a bit of looking – obviously it had to pick us up on the water but
there were not a lot of signs showing you were to go – we asked a security guard for that info). It was a
30 minute drive across the bay. We had 630 reservations at the Kaibo Upstairs restaurant, so we walked
around a bit, had a few drinks and took some pictures.
We then headed out for dinner. They were very aware that we had to take the taxi back at 915 (last trip of
the night) and that was reassuring for us. We went all out for dinner that night. We had two very good,
expensive bottles of wine. We shared some rare wahoo and an artichoke salad for appetizers, plus there was
a bread basket. For dinner, Trina had the grilled mahi-mahi, Mike had the seafood curry, and Jim &
Greta both had the baked grouper. We even shared an apple cobbler a la mode for dessert. We finished
everything and did a group picture in front of their rum cabinet. We made the water taxi in time and then
headed back to Caymana Bay for our car. Back to the condo we went – we were all quite tired by that
point.
