Day 9

It’s our last full day on the island. The time has gone fast yet it does seem like a while ago that we arrived at the airport. We had our standard scrambled eggs & bacon breakfast then waited for Duncan to give us our final bill for diving.

Then it was off to Georgetown for some shopping. Research told us most of the shops were down on Church Street – right by the cruise ships. That was true, but almost all of the shops were the same – t-shirts/trinkets/etc – very few items that were actually made in the Caymans. Mike found a larger wooden stingray that was made in Jamaica that will look great at home. We couldn’t find one that was made here. We had a quick stop at Dairy Queen for some refreshments – they had both mango & guava cheesecake blizzards there as the “local favorite” – so that’s what we tried.

We did pick up some Caymanite items, a stone only found in the Cayman islands. Greta got earrings at one shop. We then drove to another shop further down away from the cruise area that had a lot of handmade items, either from the Caymans or from nearby Carribean islands. Jim & Trina picked out a larger turtle made from Caymanite and Greta got a stingray pendant also made from Caymanite to match her earrings. We also picked up a starfish pendant made from Caymanite for Greta’s parents.

On our way back to the condo, we stopped at Coconut Joe’s for lunch – it was a place we’d driven past many times. We sat in a shady outdoor patio and had some mango daiquiris, the special of the day. For lunch, Greta had shrimp kabobs, Mike had coconut shrimp, Jim had a mahi wrap & Trina had a jerk chicken wrap. Everything was good.

Then back to the condo to change & drop off our items. Then off to the beach for the rest of the afternoon. We stopped at Cemetery Beach, where you park by the road by a Cemetary and then take a short trail back to the beach. It’s at the top of 7 mile beach. There we just relaxed, walked the beach, floated in the water and read books. We waited until sunset – the clouds ALMOST cleared off to get a clear view of a sunset but once again, we were foiled. We never got to see a full sunset into the sea our whole trip! But it was a great was to end our last day.

We headed back to the condo to change and then off to Macabuca for dinner. Jim &Trina shared a fish wrap & some fried conch; Mike & Greta shared a conch platter (fritter, fried & ceviche) and coconut shrimp. Then back to the condo for some relaxing & watching the Olympics.
