Day 1: Saturday, February 8th, 2025

One of the first "real" snowstorms that actually happened this winter started early Saturday morning. We had a 9:50am flight, but opted to leave a bit after 6am in case of traffic issues; plus the snow was coming from the south, so the sooner we left, the better. We stopped at a gas station to get cash from an ATM (the dive shop offered a discount if we paid in cash in USD). We arrived at the airport without any issues, and got the bag checked and through security with quickly. We'd dropped off Remi at Back Forty Kennel the night before, so he was already enjoying his vacation.

We had a leisurely breakfast at the airport, and then headed to our gate, where we could watch the snowplows clear the runway and tarmac. It was a full plane, so we got the perk of gate-checking our two roller bags, so we just had our personal items. It was snowing a LOT by the time we boarded our plane, but we pushed off from the gate on time. Then we had to wait in a long line to de-ice the plane, and we left about an hour late, but since it was a direct flight, it was not a big deal.

Going through customs took less than half an hour, even thought it was a very long line. It took a long time for our dive bag to show up on the belt; later we'd discovered that they'd searched the bag but obviously found nothing. Outside, we were able to find our transportation to the hotel (it was all booked through Costco) and surprisingly enough, a number of the people who'd sat next to us on the flight from MSP were also in our van. There were three stops within the van but luckily we were the first stop.

The drive took about 30 minutes but it was great to be out in the sun & heat after the cold morning. We are staying at El Presidente Intercontinental Resort. The first view of it is a long, tree-lined driveway. Everything was beautiful!

Someone took our bags inside and then we waited to check in. It was a longer wait, which was frustrating as we were tired and hot, but it sounds like a few of the other people were still needing to pay for their rooms, looking at upgrades, etc. One other couple was having issues with getting a room with bunk beds, and we don't know why some of the other people were taking so long. Our check-in maybe took 10 minutes or so, as everything had already been paid for.

Then someone took us to our room and it was beautiful! We have a poolside room at the end of a long hall. It is a long walk and at the far edge of the resort, but it's worth it. We have a large patio, a large king-sized bed, and the bathroom has a rain-shower. We dropped off our bags, and Greta got changed to cooler clothing (Mike was smart and changed at the airport). Then we went to find the dive shop to get our schedule set. That didn't take terribly long, but it was very hot & humid. Afterwards, we stopped at the Restaurante Caribeno next door for a couple drinks and to relax. We stayed through sunset, and enjoyed live music from an older gentleman playing incredible guitar. We ended up staying there for supper to enjoy some more music, and then headed back to the room. We sat up and read a bit, but then crashed, as we were both tired out. Plus it's in the Eastern time zone, so it was an hour later there.
