Happy Valentine's Day! This is our third year in a row on a dive vacation over Valentine's Day, and once again, it did not
disappoint. The day started out normal with our breakfast buffet; Mike is eating light and Greta is the "cook to order" station
again, getting the Divorciados with cheese (two fried eggs on tortillas, one topped with red sauce, and one with green sauce).
Then on to the dive shop for our last two dives. This time, our Dive Master is Gabriel (father of Gabriel Jr, who we had earlier
this week). All of our DMs this week have been wonderful! The first dive had to be moved, as the Palancar Reef is closed again
due to high winds. There were several options, and it was decided to go to Dalila, which was one of our favorite dives this earlier
this week. The beginning of the dive was pretty good - lots of small things to see, and a lot of beautiful coral an sponges. But
just as they put up the SMBs to signal the boat to come our direction, Gabriel started clanking his tank. We all went to see what
it was - a SEA HORSE!!! Those are rare to see, and not something Cozumel is known for. But he found us one that was big and
orange - just beautiful! What a lucky thing to happen on our last day diving!
The second dive was at Santa Rosa Shallow - we really notice the shallower dives have so many things to see. This was no exception,
and then once again, near the end of the dive, we got lucky. First there was a small nurse shark hanging out under some coral -
that was fun to see. And then just when it was near the end of the dive, a second, larger nurse shark swam past us - around us and
then back the other direction. It was really great to see a shark swimming around - especially a bigger one like that. It was
similar in size to Black Tipped Reef Sharks we saw in Belize. Everyone on the boat was thrilled at the day - one sea horse, two
sharks! That definitely was the way to end our diving for this trip.
That afternoon, we just took it easy. We sat in lounge chairs by the "family" pool (the big one by the restaurants and beach) and
just relaxed all afternoon, reading our books. The restaurant where we have breakfast that day was closed for the entire afternoon
and evening for a large wedding, apparently for a couple from Minneapolis. It was a bit odd to be sitting out in a swimsuit as
nicely dressed people walked around our chairs to get from the beach wedding to the reception. After we'd read for a few hours, we
walked over to Le Cap. There we shared a prosciutto/arugula pizza and had a couple of drinks; we'd hoped to see the sunset one last
time but it was overcast so the sun was hidden as we progressed into evening.
We headed back to the room to change before our dinner reservations at "Alfredo de Roma Trattoria", one of the two "fancier"
restaurants on site, where reservations are strongly suggested. We had hoped to go to the other restaurant, as it featured
international flavors and seafood but waited until the day before to make reservations. Trattoria had an opening at 8 pm, so
we took that instead. In hindsight, it was nice we didn't have a reservation until then as it allowed us extra beach time that
afternoon and no rush to get ready. We were seated promptly and given menus that looked normal until you opened them and realized
that they were back-lit - which was very nice in a dimly lit setting. We ordered a bottle of wine (Nero di Avola, always a
favorite of ours) and while we skipped an appetizer, they brought out the bread basket along with crispy bread straws and a little
tray with olive oil, balsamic vinegar oil, tomato paste, and pesto oil. Mike ordered the "Crusted salmon with orange sauce and
ginger". Greta got the "Squid ink pappardelle with shrimp and crab". Everything was AMAZINGLY good! We were almost full but
there's always room for ice cream! So we ordered that - one scoop of vanilla and one of strawberry, with two cookies on the
side. It was a perfect way to end the evening.
