Dive Day #1! We have an included breakfast in our booking, so we headed there right when they opened at 7am. We brought our dive
gear along with, as the dive shop is right next door and far from our room. Breakfast was great. The buffet was large, and a few
things were still getting set up at 7am, but they already had out eggs, sausage, potatoes, fruit, pastries, etc. We had a leisurely
breakfast and then checked in around the corner, at Scuba-Du. We were told we were the #4 boat and then headed there to wait. There
were about a dozen people on the boat and 4 staff, plus the captain.
Our first dive was Santa Rosa Wall. The current is stronger at different levels but we were all split into groups of 4 or less, so
it was easy to keep together with our group. It was a beautiful wall and there were a lot of fish. The water was 81 degrees, so that
was very pleasant. The absolute highlight was that we saw FOUR Eagle Rays. That's more on one dive than we've ever seen before - sometimes
more than we'd see in an entire vacation. There was also a frog fish that some of through group got to see - that was impressive!
The surface interval took place as we went to our 2nd dive site. There was fresh fruit and a sweet corn cake for eating while we
waited. The 2nd dive was close to the cruise ship pier (which is also close to our hotel). We dropped down to a bottom of only about
35 feet and it was white sand without much to see. But that didn't last long... this dive we saw a LOT of different things. There were
baby drum fish, a nurse shark, a turtle busy munch on seaweed, star fish, a barracuda, a few HUGE crabs, a golden spotted eel, a small
lobster or two and a number of little yellow spotted stingrays. It was amazing all the different things we saw on that dive.
After we got back to the resort, we went back to the room, showered, and tried to hang everything out to dry. There is a drying rack
outside, but that's not quite big enough for towels, wet suits, etc for two people. There are nice big closets in the room but there
are no hangers, except for where two robes were hanging. We got everything hung up the best we could, and then got a taxi into the
central area of town.
We walked for a bit, looking for an ATM to get pesos. The first two machines (same place) didn't have a button working for turning down
the exchange fee, so we opted to find a different one. The 2nd machine worked but never offered the option to turn down he exchange
fee - I guess we'll find out about that later. Most of the shops were the typical foreign-made t-shirt shops but there was one we looked
into which was very large and had a lot of beautiful items in it. We may have even found Greta's turtle for the trip but don't want to
buy it on the first day.
After that, we walked a lot more and put up with some annoying sales people. Eventually we found a restaurant called Palmeros (which had
been recommended by Greta's coworker Will) and we both had fish tacos and a couple of beers. Then we walked some more, just enjoying the
sun and sights. We stopped in at one place to get a margarita in a beautiful waterside setting, but after sitting for 10 minutes with
no one to wait on us, we left. We stopped at different place Portosal, and this time got wonderful service. The food on the menu, mainly
higher-end pizzas, looked good but we weren't hungry, so had a couple of margaritas, and then left. The wait staff there got us set up
with a taxi and we headed back to the hotel. We relaxed in the room and on the patio for a couple of hours, making a quick stop to watch
the sunset from the beach (we can't see it from our room), and then back to the room for a bit. Around 8, we headed back to the beach to
have supper at Restaurante Le Cap, which is also on the beach at the resort, across from the place we were at yesterday. The food there
was very good. Mike had the pesto linguini dish with a side of Brussel sprouts. Greta had the catch of the day (mahi mahi) puttanesca
style on a bed of risotto and a side of asparagus. It was all excellent!
The Super Bowl was on at the other place during dinner but we weren't really paying attention. Once Mike saw that Philly was beating
KC 24-0 at half-time, we decided to watch the game when we got back. Mike fell asleep but Greta watched it until the end AND won $250
on the football pool board back in MN. What a way to end the night!
