Breakfast as usual, Greta tried the last of the specials - Rancheros (fried eggs on top of corn tortillas, topped with tomato rancheros
sauce plus cheese) plus bacon and a croissant. Mike had scrambled eggs and bacon. We're really happy with the Costco booking for this
place, as it included breakfast every day.
After check in we headed out for our dives. We were supposed to go to the southern end of the island to dive Palancar Caves but due to
winds, the entire Palancar Reef and surrounding area was closed to small boat traffic. So we dove the San Francisco site instead. Joshua
was our dive master. This was a pretty dive but the current was strong and there was absolutely no need to kick at all. It was more of
a "conveyor belt" feeling where you just moved past everything at a steady pace. We did see some cool fish and coral; right at the end,
as we were surfacing, there was a huge sting ray laying on the bottom, partially covered in sand. We were going to do a different dive
for the second site as well but then were notified that San Clemente was open, so we dove that normal site for a 2nd Thursday dive. This
was a shallow dive, less than 40 feet the entire way. But we saw so many different fish. There were lobster of course, some huge porcupine
fish, and near the end we saw a number of barracuda. Mike's camera battery died early on in the previous dive, so we didn't get as many
pictures this time, but it still turned out to be one of our favorite dives of the week.
After getting back to the resort, Mike did his customary dip in the hot tub and Greta returned to the room. We cleaned up and then got a
taxi into town. We wanted to do our shopping today. First we needed to stop at an ATM to get more pesos, so we went to the same one as
last time. We stopped at El Coctelito for a drink; nothing noteworthy, so we headed out. Next was a stop at Los Cincos Soles, which was
a nicer-than-normal shop that had some carvings we were interested in. Greta got her turtle, carved from black stone. We were hoping for
a crocodile or eagle ray, but they had none. We then wandered to the shops near the cruise ship port and wandered in and out of SO many
shops. Somewhere around the 10th shop, we found a crocodile - not perfect but something to look at. The one next to it also had a
possibility. From there we looked a quite few more shops, all the owners rushing out to lure us in, not having a crocodile and not knowing
what an eagle ray was. Finally we found a great eagle ray made from iron wood but the price was much too high, even after bargaining down. We
saw a few more shops and stopped for a quick drink. From there we were looking at one shop, asked about rays, and were were brought into
another shop around the corner. This one he had multiple ironwood eagle rays and they were all expensive as well. There were also a couple
painted ones and a ray encrusted in abalone shell. Mike was able to bargain it down somewhat, and we left with an expensive item to add to
our "vacation figure collection" but it's absolutely gorgeous.
From there we walked down to Kondesa, which had been recommended by a diver earlier that week. It's in a quieter neighborhood near away
from the chaos of the waterfront but still near some shops. It's all outside, in a small seating area surrounded by trees so it felt like
you were in a jungle - very beautiful. We got the lion fish cakes that the diver had recommended and they were amazing. They were also
accompanied by two black bean cakes that were complimentary from the kitchen. With all of that, we shared a "Cozumel Bowl" which was a
tequila cocktail made for two. It was quite good and mixed with a lot of juices. For dinner, we both had the catch-of-the-day, which
was mahi mahi. Mike got the Yucatan Fish - it had filet of fish topping accompanied by rice, a Yucatan black recado sauce and wine
squash. Greta got the Oaxaca Fish - which was slices of baked potato topped with the fish and surrounded by two separate mole sauces and
some zucchini slices. Everything was excellent, and it was a great meal!
After that, we walked back to the harbor area, and Mike hailed a cab to take us back to the resort. We floated around in our pool for a
bit, and it even started raining very lightly. We then headed in and hung out in the room a bit before going to sleep - it was a long
but great day.
